Ep 63. How to Eliminate Brand Guesswork

Nourish Your Brand · Episode 63

Something keeps popping up lately, in client chats, my DMs, my own work, and the underlying thing is guesswork.

Not because people aren't creative, but because they're making decisions without anything solid to lean on.

And when you do that over and over, the small things start to make you question yourself.

Let's get into it.

‍ ‍

Guesswork felt like copywriting did for me

Writing used to be my kryptonite. I'd brace myself before I'd even started. I knew what I wanted to say, but not how to say it, so I'd rewrite, overthink and edit, wondering if it even sounded like me. Nothing was technically wrong, I can write, I just didn't have a clear voice to anchor into, so every sentence felt like a big decision and it was draining.

Once I committed to my foundation, how I wanted to show up and what I wanted to talk about, it got lighter. Not effortless, but I stopped wrestling with every sentence.

I see the exact same thing with design. When people talk about their brand, it's never really "bad branding", it's that they're designing without solid foundations. So a normal post becomes an internal negotiation: what colours am I using? Is this still my font? Does this fit my brand? The guesswork creeps in quietly and makes everything more effortful than it needs to be. (That's the same root as the four signs in Episode 62)

‍ ‍

What it feels like with the anchor in place

Imagine you know your palette and fonts, and you know why they're there and what they do for your brand (having a palette isn't the same as having foundations).

You stop asking "does this work?" and just choose between options.

You make a post, export it, publish it, move on, no circling back six times wondering if you should redo it.

‍ ‍

"I'm a bit bored of my branding" is a good sign

When the guesswork goes, things can start to feel repetitive, "these colours again, this font again." People get the itch to refresh, thinking they've outgrown it. But just because you're bored of seeing it every day doesn't mean your audience is, they're only just starting to recognise it, going "I knew that was your post before I saw your name." That's not boring, that's your branding working.

Recognition is the goal, not novelty. Your branding isn't there to entertain you endlessly, it's there to represent you consistently. (More on evolving with intention in Episode 50, Part 5)

‍ ‍

Ask yourself this week

Does creating content feel like an internal negotiation every time?

Do you know why your colours and fonts are there, not just what they are?

Are you itching to change your brand because it's genuinely not working, or just because you've seen it a lot?

‍ ‍

Where to go from here

There isn't one right way to remove guesswork, a brand kit, custom branding, working with a designer, or just committing to decisions you've been avoiding, all of it can work. What matters is how you feel after: less friction, less "does it look right?", more ease and consistency, more "yes, I know what I'm doing."

If you'd like support, a Brand Recipe session talks over your strategy, my Brand Foundation Kits set the foundations for you, and my Brand Kitchen is the full custom sprint. Pop me a DM and we'll work out what you need.

Here's More…

Why does my branding feel so effortful? Usually guesswork, you're making decisions without solid foundations to lean on, so every small choice feels heavier than it should. With a clear anchor in place, you stop second-guessing and just create.

I'm bored of my branding, should I change it? Probably not just because you're bored. You see your brand every day, your audience is only starting to recognise it. Feeling a bit bored often means your branding is finally working. Change it when it's genuinely not serving you, not for novelty.

What's the best way to remove brand guesswork? There's no single right way, a brand kit, custom branding, a strategy session, or simply committing to decisions you've avoided. What matters is that afterwards you feel less friction and more ease. A Brand Recipe session is a good starting point.
