Ep 35. Branding Hesitations (and Why Waiting Costs You More)

Nourish Your Brand · Episode 35

If you've ever felt stuck deciding when to invest in your branding, you're not alone. Branding feels like a big decision, because it is, it's how your business is perceived and what makes people instantly trust you're the right choice. So it's natural to want to get it right. But some of the "logical" reasons we wait are the very things keeping us stuck. Let's get into the real hesitations, and the hidden cost of each.

‍ ‍

"My business isn't ready for branding yet"

The most common one. You feel you need a certain income, more clarity, better clients, more something before you deserve to invest. But branding isn't the reward for having it all figured out, it's the tool that helps you get there. Without it you're stuck procrasti-tweaking, and every time you change things you reset your audience's familiarity, so instead of becoming known for something, you start from scratch again and again.

Every month you wait is another month people land on your page and leave because you don't look ready.

The shift: you go from constantly adjusting to confidently showing up, with clarity on what your brand stands for. (If you're not sure whether yours is genuinely holding you back, Episode 32 covers the signs)

‍ ‍

"I should spend on marketing instead"

A biggie. People think they need more visibility when what they actually need is recognisability. Marketing gets people in the door, but branding is what makes them stay. With the best marketing in the world, if your brand is unclear or forgettable, you'll keep attracting people and losing them. You get engagement, but not sales, because every lead starts from scratch.

When your branding isn't up to scratch, marketing has to work ten times harder. When it's strong, people come pre-sold.

The shift: you stop chasing clients and start attracting them, because they already know you're the right choice, and your marketing works far harder for you.

‍ ‍

"I can just DIY it for now"

DIY feels smart because it saves money, but past a point it costs more than it saves. Every month of DIY quietly slows you down, people don't take you as seriously, you can't raise your prices, and "I'll do this for now" turns into months of second-guessing while your business stays put. If you're stuck in Canva mode, you're not running your business, you're running a never-ending branding project.

The shift: you create a recognisable identity so people instantly know your content is yours, and you're taken seriously from the start. (This is exactly the trap I talked about in Episode 34, where doing it all yourself makes you the bottleneck)

‍ ‍

"What if I invest and it doesn't work?"

The fear is real, especially if past investments didn't pan out. But flip it: the bigger risk isn't investing, it's staying exactly where you are. Right now people are making split-second decisions about whether they trust you, and if your branding feels unclear or outdated, they don't ask for clarity, they just move on. The question isn't "what if branding doesn't work?", it's "what happens if I keep going without it?" If nothing changes, nothing changes.

The shift: instead of working harder to get sales, you have a brand that does part of the selling for you, so clients come ready to buy.

Here's More…

When should I invest in branding? Sooner than you think. Branding isn't a reward for having everything figured out, it's the tool that helps you get there. Waiting just delays the clarity, recognition and trust that make selling easier.

Should I spend on marketing or branding first? They work together, but branding makes marketing far more effective. Marketing gets people in the door; branding makes them stay and remember you. Without it, every lead starts from scratch and your ad spend works harder than it should.

Is DIY branding a good idea? It can work at the very start, but past a point it costs more than it saves, in credibility, pricing power and your time. If you're stuck endlessly tweaking, that's a sign it's time to hand it over, which is what the Brand Chef's Special is for.
