Ep 32. 3 Signs Your Branding Is Holding You Back

Nourish Your Brand · Episode 32

You know when you take a sip of tea expecting it to be rich and full, but it's weak and watery? No depth, no warmth, just a bit disappointing. That's exactly what happens when your branding isn't doing its job. On the surface it looks okay, but people don't feel anything. Let's talk about the three biggest signs your branding is holding you back, and what to do about each. Let's get into it.

‍ ‍

Sign 1: your brand is stuck in the starter phase

When you launched, you probably DIY'd your branding, some colours, a quick logo, a free Canva template. That's exactly right when you're starting out. But if it still feels scrappy or inconsistent, it can make your business look less credible than it actually is. Every touchpoint feels like a different version of you, clients don't quite take you seriously, and you're hesitant to raise prices because the brand doesn't look the part.

Like weak tea brewed in lukewarm water, it got you by at the start. But as your business matured, your flavour did too, and now you need a properly brewed, full-bodied brand. What to do: check your brand against your dream clients' expectations, look at whether it's cohesive or a patchwork of quick fixes, and upgrade the touchpoints that no longer reflect the business you run now.

‍ ‍

Sign 2: you're constantly explaining your offer

Your offer is brilliant and you've seen the results, but every time you talk about it people seem confused. "Wait, so what do you actually do?" "How's it different from [generic alternative]?" If you're over-explaining on calls, emails and DMs, that hesitation kills conversions. It's like a pile of unlabelled teabags, nobody risks brewing one when they can't tell what's inside. (I went deep on this in Episode 64.)

This usually happens when your message is vague, you're not positioned as the obvious choice, or your visuals don't match your value. What to do: make your transformation clear and enticing, make your uniqueness impossible to miss, and align your branding so the visuals instantly communicate the quality and result you deliver. The strongest brands don't convince people, they make the decision obvious. Giving your offer that clarity is exactly what the Offer Oven does.

‍ ‍

Sign 3: your branding hasn't kept up with your growth

Your business today isn't what it was at the start. You've refined your skills, worked with more clients, maybe shifted your positioning. If your branding hasn't kept up, there's a disconnect. Maybe you used to serve beginners but now work with six-figure clients, yet your brand still feels too casual. Maybe you've raised your prices but your branding still signals the lower point. (This is one of the right reasons to rebrand, which I covered in Episode 16.)

Branding isn't set-it-and-forget-it. What to do: match your branding to your expertise so it attracts high-calibre clients, update your messaging to sound like the confident you of today, and audit every touchpoint so it reinforces the business you run now. Strong branding reinforces your expertise instead of working against it, and aligning your whole brand to where you are now is the heart of the Brand Kitchen.

‍ ‍

Ask yourself this week

Does your brand still look like the version you threw together at the start?

Are you spending more time explaining your offer than selling it?

Does your branding reflect the expert you are now, or the one you were five years ago?

Here's More…

How do I know if my branding is holding me back? Three common signs: it still looks like the scrappy version from when you started, you're constantly explaining your offer, and it no longer reflects how much your business has grown. Any of these quietly cost you credibility and clients.

Why do people keep asking what I do even though my offer is clear to me? Usually your messaging is too vague, you're not positioned as the obvious choice, or your visuals don't match your value, so people hesitate. Clear positioning and aligned branding make the decision obvious.

Does my branding need to change as my business grows? Yes. Branding isn't set-it-and-forget-it. If you've raised your prices, shifted your niche or levelled up your clients, your branding needs to signal that, which is exactly what the Brand Kitchen helps with.
