Ep 39. Manage Your Money With Confidence, with Emilie Nutley
Nourish Your Brand · Episode 39
Today we're talking money. My guest is Emilie Nutley, a money coach and financial strategist for online service providers, coaches and creatives, whose job is to help you make and manage money with confidence.
We get into reverse-engineering from your goals, making profit (not just income), and the practical systems that actually work. Let's get into it.
Start with the goal and reverse-engineer
Emilie always starts with the goal, knowing exactly how much you need to make, then builds everything backwards from there. When she went all in, she had three months to replace her income, so she knew her number. Numbers are just data, just storytelling, and looking at them helps you spot where you need support, "is it my branding? Is it my messaging?"
Most people track income and expenses but stop there. The missing piece is a plan for the profit: what is it doing, and how is it being used to make more?
Make profit, not just income (money is a tool)
Emilie's biggest mindset shift was treating business money as real money, not "monopoly money" you reinvest on a whim because it feels free. She shifted from "make more money" to maximising profit so she could pay herself, with every investment geared towards that.
And she gently calls out the entrepreneur trap of "I'll just make more money" as an excuse not to manage today's money, you end up stuck in a cycle of making more, for what? Money is a tool you use for something specific.
This is the money side of a theme I talk about constantly: the right clients want the investment and the transformation, not the cheap thing. (Which is exactly the perception and pricing point in Episode 57, and what Ceels covered in Episode 36)
Tracking is the one habit
If Emilie could give every business owner one habit, it's tracking, because once you know your numbers, they're far less scary; the fear comes from the unknown. Keep it simple, no color-coded mega-spreadsheets, just one page: what came in, what went out, what's left. That's what lets you make confident decisions, and check before you hit "buy" on the next shiny offer.
Build a management system that works
We all know how to budget on paper, it's the day-to-day implementation where people fall down and start telling themselves "I'm bad with money." Emilie's fixes: separate business and personal accounts, pay yourself a set salary on a set payday, and (controversially) she's not a fan of Profit First, splitting money thinly across five accounts keeps running you to zero and tips you into scarcity. Instead, run your business from one account with pots for tax and a buffer.
The buffer (so you always pay yourself)
Anything in your business account on payday over what you need goes into a buffer (overflow, working capital, whatever you call it). So in a low month when a payment plan drops off, you pull from the buffer and still pay yourself consistently. How big a buffer is personal, it depends on your risk tolerance and your business's natural ups and downs, but start with a "safe" number that takes the weight off your shoulders.
A financial audit and a monthly money date
For personal finances, Emilie has clients audit 3 to 12 months of real spending, because people pluck budget numbers from the sky that don't match reality.
Split personal accounts into bills, necessary spending and joyful spending, so an overspend on groceries is a symptom to investigate, not a reason to berate yourself. Then hold a monthly money date, block a few hours, put the numbers in front of you, and make decisions.
A joyful spending list (note what you want, what it costs and why) keeps shiny-object FOMO in check, including when other people are using sales psychology on you.
Ask yourself this week
Do you know your number, the amount you actually need to make?
Are you making profit, or just income you reinvest on a whim?
Do you have one simple page where you track what's coming in and out?
