Ep 41. Why Cute Branding Isn't Enough

Nourish Your Brand · Episode 41

This one's for the business owner thinking "I've got branding, it looks cute, but something isn't quite landing." Your palette's nice, the fonts are lovely, people comment "your posts look so good." But your content isn't converting, you still have to explain your offer, and every launch leaves you wondering why people aren't buying. Let's talk about why cute branding, as fun as it is, isn't enough on its own.

‍ ‍

Looking good was the goal (and that was the problem)

That was me when I started Studio Coya. I made the branding look good, because that was the goal, fun, playful, the right energy. And it did look good. But over time it wasn't showing what I wanted my brand to represent or the work I was doing, and talking about what I did started feeling harder, because there was a disconnect. It had served its purpose, but my business had evolved and the branding hadn't caught up. I needed more than branding that looked good, I needed branding that worked, that made people understand what I was here to do. Branding is meant to do something for you: be clear, create connection, get conversions. If it's only doing the "look nice" job, of course it feels like it's not pulling its weight.

‍ ‍

A brand that works has layers

Here's the food metaphor, obviously. A proper croissant has layers, dough and butter folded over and over until it's light, flaky and buttery. Now imagine biting into what looks like a good croissant but it's doughy and stodgy inside, nice on the outside, disappointing within. That's branding with no depth. A brand that works has three layers:

Your business brand. The foundation that sets the tone, the atmosphere people experience on your website or Instagram. It's how you sound, show up and connect, and where the attraction happens.

Your offer brand. The layer that usually gets skipped. Your offer needs its own identity, its own visual cues, voice and little world, so people go "oh, this is what I need."

Your theme. The thing you fold through both that ties it all together and helps it rise. Your theme gives your brand its flavour, the story and emotional through-line that makes you memorable and magnetic, so people feel like it was made for them. That's what turns cute into compelling.

‍ ‍

What happens when a layer is missing

If your branding looks good but isn't clicking, if your content gets compliments but no responses, or people engage but never click buy, chances are a layer is missing. It's either not attracting the right audience, not helping you convert your offer, or not tied together in a way that sticks.

You might have one or two layers, but if they're not folded together, your branding doesn't rise. That's not your fault, you've built something beautiful, we just need to add and fold in the missing layers. (If you suspect it's gone further than that, Episode 32 covers the signs your branding's holding you back)

‍ ‍

Don't redo everything yet

This is where people panic: "does that mean I have to redo it all?" Maybe, but not yet. A rebrand without clarity is just changing outfits when you don't know where you're going.

Before redesigning anything, understand the role of each layer and what you're missing: Is your business branding doing its job? Does your offer brand communicate what your offer does? What theme ties it together in a way that feels like you?

Once you know that, what you do next feels intentional, not random. (And getting your foundation clear first is the whole point of Episode 30)

‍ ‍

Ask yourself this week

Does your branding get compliments but not conversions?

Which layer might be missing, business, offer, or theme?

Is your offer blending into your business brand instead of standing on its own?

‍ ‍

Where to go from here

If your brand looks cute but feels underwhelming, theming is often the first step on a much more exciting journey. That's why I run my free Knead a Theme challenge, it's not about picking a cute word, it's about giving your brand the flavour to fold in, working through what your theme actually needs to do.

And when you're ready to build all three layers properly, that's my Brand Chef's Special. Book a free Brand Pairing call to chat.

Here's More…

Why does my branding look good but not convert? Because looking good is only one job. If your branding isn't also clear, connecting and converting, it's missing layers, usually a distinct offer brand or a theme that ties it all together.

What are the three layers of a brand that works? Your business brand (the foundation that attracts), your offer brand (the identity that converts), and your theme (the flavour folded through both that makes you memorable). All three folded together is what makes a brand rise.

Do I need to rebrand if my branding feels off? Not necessarily, and not before you have clarity. First work out which layer is missing, then act intentionally. My free Knead a Theme challenge is a great first step.
