Ep 49. How Your Personal Style Reflects Your Brand, with Sophia Bayly
Nourish Your Brand · Episode 49
Today we're diving into personal style with Sophia Bayly, a personal stylist for visible entrepreneurs.
If your wardrobe hasn't been reflecting who you are in business, or getting dressed has started to feel like a chore, this one's full of practical tips and some brilliant parallels between styling and branding. I left this conversation itching to go through my own wardrobe. Let's get into it.
Your personal style is an extension of your brand
Sophia sees our personal brands as an extension of our tastes, values and interests, there's so much of our handwriting and DNA in both that she can usually guess someone's personal style from their business socials. It's a symbiotic, chicken-and-egg relationship.
To express it well, you need to understand the foundations of what it actually is, the same way a brand has its value words.
Style pillars (just like brand values)
Sophia gets clients to build style pillars, the styling equivalent of brand value words. Hers are timeless, modern and bold (sometimes creative), and she infuses them into both her style and her brand, even shaping her offer around wanting something modern for the modern woman.
And just like brand words, you have to define what each one means to you, "modern" might mean clean lines and high contrast to one person and something completely different to another, so when you're out shopping you know what fits. (This is exactly why I anchor branding in personality words before any visuals, the work in Episode 11, and the kind of clarity a Brand Recipe session gives you)
Getting dressed builds confidence (style is a muscle)
Feeling good in your clothes is the simplest, most powerful form of self-care, and we know the connection between looking good and feeling confident. But as business owners working from home and on Zoom, we fall into "no one's seeing me, I'll just be comfy", and styling is a muscle: the less you practise, the more the panic sets in when a networking event appears.
So get dressed for yourself, it changes how you show up on stories, on calls and pitching that scary client. To make your art you need the tools, so if your wardrobe doesn't give you that flexibility, build one that does.
Build a versatile wardrobe (basics, staples, personality)
Sophia balances a wardrobe across basics (your white tees), staples (the slightly-more-investment timeless pieces, a great blazer or leather bag), and personality pieces (quirky earrings, fun trainers, a food-pun tee).
People go wrong by going too basic (boring) or too magpie (can't build outfits). Get an even spread, then learn to put outfits together confidently, which is what her style coaching does. (It's the same as a brand: foundations plus flavour, which is the Brand Kitchen in clothing form)
It's not just the clothes
A favourite Sophia reframe: people put too much pressure on the top or the dress to do all the talking. Her formula is a white tee and jeans (boring on its own) plus a cool jacket, fun shoes, different glasses and a unique bag, and suddenly it's stylish, none of it from the clothes themselves.
For calls and content, frame your face with a collar or earrings, small tweaks that read on screen and express your style. (Same energy as a brand's signature visual cue, the recognition idea in Episode 26)
Ask yourself this week
What are your style pillars, and do they match your brand's personality?
Is your wardrobe balanced across basics, staples and personality pieces?
What small accessory could become a signature, on calls and on camera?
