Ep 61. Why Your Visuals Struggle Before You Even Start
Nourish Your Brand · Episode 61
Today I want to talk about what sits underneath your visuals.
Not your logo, not your Instagram templates, not even your colour palette on its own, the stuff everything else is built from.
Because most brands don't fall apart at the logo stage, they fall apart earlier, in the foundation.
Before you even open Canva, you've often made your life harder than it needs to be. Let's get into it.
What I mean by your "brand pantry"
Your brand ingredients are the things you reach for again and again: your core colours, typefaces, the shapes and elements that keep popping up, the imagery and textures you gravitate towards. That collection is your brand's pantry, the stuff on your shelf you pull from every time you design anything.
And just like with food, your experience of designing depends entirely on what's in the cupboard and how it's been put together.
How most businesses end up here
You see a font on Pinterest, save it, it joins the pile. You grab a pretty palette's hex codes. You buy a template pack to make life easier, and suddenly that template is deciding your brand's energy. Months later you grab another template with a totally different mood.
Now you've got half-used palettes, fonts that don't go together, and templates with clashing moods, none of it edited down or curated. So every time you design, you're not choosing from a small intentional set, you're rummaging. And like a stuffed pantry, having too much somehow feels like having nothing.
Where the struggle really starts
Three things happen. Every new graphic feels like starting from scratch, making fresh decisions on things that should already be decided.
Nothing quite matches, each piece looks okay alone but zoom out across your feed, website and emails and it's almost cohesive, not quite. And there's no default to fall back on, so decision fatigue kicks in and you start procrasti-tweaking: an hour in Canva nudging one line, changing the font, swapping colours, until you feel embarrassed to show up or avoid it altogether.
It's not that you lack ideas, the stuff you're working with is fighting you. (This is the same root as the four signs in Episode 62)
The gingerbread problem
Imagine making gingerbread and finding five flours, three random half-empty sugars, a 2018 spice mix and some leftover rosemary. You can throw it together and bake something, but it won't taste like gingerbread.
The problem isn't that you can't turn the oven on, it's that the ingredients were never meant to belong together. That's how most brand pantries look.
What a curated set looks like
A good setup is actually small: a limited set of colours that work together with clear roles, one or two typefaces with defined jobs, a handful of shapes or motifs you reuse, and a photography style you reach for. The key difference is that everything in the cupboard belongs together. Then designing feels lighter, you're not reinventing the wheel, just making small variations from ingredients you already trust.
Most people tell me they just want things to look cohesive, like they've thought it through, and to feel proud to show up. Underneath that is a desire for clarity and confidence, a brand that feels like you. (That's foundations before flavour, which is Episode 5)
Ask yourself this week
What's actually on your brand pantry shelf right now?
Were those ingredients chosen on purpose, or collected at random?
What would it feel like to design from a set you can fully trust?
Where to go from here
You don't have to fix it all at once, noticing is a great start. When I did my 30-branded-offers challenge, each outcome became a ready-made set of ingredients with a defined vibe, palette and type pairings, so I turned them into Brand Foundation Kits, one-of-a-kind concepts where everything's chosen to play nicely together. And if you'd rather build yours with me, that's a Brand Recipe session. Come tell me on Instagram what's on your shelf.

Here's More…
Why do my brand visuals feel chaotic? Usually because your "brand pantry" is full of ingredients collected at random, fonts, colours and templates that were never meant to work together. Designing from a mismatched set makes everything feel like starting from scratch.
What are brand ingredients? The colours, typefaces, shapes, motifs and photography style you reach for every time you create. When they're chosen intentionally and belong together, designing gets lighter and your brand feels cohesive.
How do I fix inconsistent visuals? Curate a small, intentional set of ingredients that work together with clear roles, rather than collecting more. You don't have to fix it all at once. A Brand Foundation Kit or a Brand Recipe session gives you that trusted set.
