Ep 33. Branding Mistakes That Are Costing You Clients

Nourish Your Brand · Episode 33

You know that feeling when you launch something and instead of people jumping in, you get hesitation, a ton of questions, "I love what you do but I'm not sure it's for me," and somehow you're still the one convincing them? When your branding is working, it says a lot before you even have to. Often what's in the way is one of three totally avoidable branding mistakes. Let's get into them.

‍ ‍

Mistake 1: treating your business and offer as the same thing

This is one of the biggest, and I made it myself years ago. Your business brand is the restaurant, the foundation that holds credibility and trust. Your offer branding is the dish, the decision-maker that gets people off the fence. When all your offers look, sound and feel identical, the lines blur, and confused people hesitate, which is where you lose the sale.

I had a client with a structured group program and a flexible community membership, both great, but because they shared one brand, people assumed they had to choose, or mixed them up entirely. We gave the group program its own distinct identity, and the result was instant clarity and more sign-ups.

The fix: brand your business for authority, brand your offers for clarity, and differentiate each one visually and strategically while keeping it in the family. (I went deep on this in Episode 27) Giving a signature offer its own identity is exactly what the Offer Oven does.

‍ ‍

Mistake 2: focusing on visuals, not strategy

Your branding should look good, but aesthetics without strategy is like a beautifully plated dish that tastes bland. It might look great, but if it doesn't deliver the right experience, people won't come back. You'll attract the wrong people, or none at all.

I worked with a consultant attracting all the wrong clients because her branding was too playful, fun fonts, hand-drawn illustrations, while her actual work was deep, strategic and high-impact. Her dream clients assumed she wasn't serious. We refined her strategy first, then aligned the visuals, and in came the high-calibre clients with no more explaining.

The fix: get clear on your brand strategy first, your positioning, values and how you want to be perceived, then make sure your identity matches the experience of working with you, and that your messaging and visuals tell the same story. Getting that strategy clear first is exactly what a Brand Recipe session is for. (More on foundations before visuals in Episode 30)

‍ ‍

Mistake 3: changing your branding too often

When your branding doesn't feel quite right, the instinct is to tweak it. But imagine your favourite dish tasting different every time, spicy one day, sweet the next. That's what constant tweaking does. Instead of building a signature flavour people recognise, you make them start from scratch every few months.

Here's the hard truth: if you keep changing your branding, it's not a design problem, it's a clarity problem. I worked with a strategist who changed her branding slightly every launch, new colours, new font, sometimes a new logo, so her audience never formed a connection. Once she locked in a clear strategy and committed to one identity, recognition, trust and high-calibre clients followed.

The fix: nail your positioning and foundations first, build a strategy rooted in your values and vision (not just what looks good right now), and then stick with it. The brands people recognise instantly are the consistent ones. (Consistency is the whole theme of Episode 3)

‍ ‍

Ask yourself this week

Can your audience tell your offers apart, or do they blur together?

Is your branding built on strategy, or just visuals you liked?

And have you been tweaking your brand so often that people can't recognise you?

Here's More…

What are the most common branding mistakes? Treating your business and offer as the same thing, focusing on visuals instead of strategy, and changing your branding too often. All three make people hesitate, and hesitation costs you sales.

Why do my offers confuse my audience? Usually because they all share the same look and feel, so people can't tell them apart or know which one is for them. Giving each signature offer its own identity creates instant clarity.

Is it bad to change my branding? Constant tweaking is, because people never get to recognise you. If you keep wanting to change it, that's usually a clarity problem, not a design one. Nail your strategy first, then commit to a consistent identity.
