Ep 44. 3 Signs Your Branding Problem Is Actually a Theming Problem (Theming Part 3)
Nourish Your Brand · Episode 44
If you're staring at your branding thinking "I've ticked all the boxes, so why does it still feel off?", this final part of the theming series is for you. Your branding isn't broken, you might just be missing something.
When branding isn't rooted in something deeper and strategic, it can look right but still not work, because it isn't persuading anyone to connect. That missing thing is often a theme. Let's get into it.
A few quick questions first
"I already have branding, why isn't it enough?" Great-looking branding gives you the look but not the language. Without a clear idea pulling everything together, it's like baking a cake without knowing the flavour, you've got the eggs, sugar and flour, but what are you making and who's it for? A theme turns your brand into something people understand and connect with. (Which is the whole "foundations and flavour" idea from Episode 30)
"Isn't a theme just fluff?" Not a strategic one. It's not a tagline or a trend, it's a perspective, the thread that ties your strategy, visuals, voice, messaging and offers so they all point the same direction. It's why your copy sounds like you and people land on your page and go "oh, I get this now."
"What if I pick the wrong theme?" Themes aren't tattoos, they evolve, just like your branding. You're not marrying it, you're using it to move forward. And no, you don't need to dump everything you've already done, this is about doing it more intentionally, not doing more.
Sign 1: you're always over-explaining your offer
You've got a good offer, but every time you talk about it you have to add context, long captions to set the scene, frequent sales-page tweaks, long voice notes explaining the nuance.
If your brand isn't making your offer clear on its own, a theme can act like shorthand, a succinct, consistent way to talk about your offer that's easy to remember.
Sign 2: people love your brand but don't remember what you do
"Your brand is so cute," "your feed looks amazing," but those compliments don't turn into clients. Liking your vibe isn't the same as connecting to your value.
A theme creates stickiness. Instead of "she's the one with the nice Instagram feed," it becomes "she's the one who makes SEO feel like a treasure hunt," or "who teaches launching through astrology," or "who makes operations feel like Tetris." A clear theme helps people remember you, not just your colours.
Sign 3: you keep changing your branding but nothing feels right
Three colour palettes deep, a new Canva template every post, endless sales-page tweaks, and nothing sticks. That's because you're solving a positioning problem with design decisions, when what you need is a unifying idea, a theme that gives direction and cohesion so your visuals, voice and messaging finally work together. (This is the constant-tweaking trap from Episode 33, often it's a clarity problem, not a design one)
When clients work with me in the Brand Chef's Special, this is one of the biggest breakthroughs. They arrive thinking they need a new logo, when what they really need is clarity about what they stand for and how to show it, and one of the main tools that gets them there is a theme.
Ask yourself this week
Are you constantly over-explaining your offer?
Do people compliment your vibe but forget what you actually do?
Have you been redesigning over and over when the real issue is positioning?
Where to go from here
If your branding isn't broken but it's not quite working, a theme might be the missing piece, and once you know that, the rest of your branding decisions get easier.

How do I know if I have a branding problem or a theming problem? Three signs point to theming: you're always over-explaining your offer, people love your vibe but don't remember what you do, and you keep redesigning without anything sticking. Those are clarity and positioning issues a theme solves.
Is a theme just an aesthetic choice? No. A strategic theme is a perspective, the thread that ties your strategy, visuals, voice and offers together so they point the same way. It's what makes people land on your page and instantly get you.
What if I choose the wrong theme? Themes aren't permanent, they evolve with your brand. You're not marrying a theme, you're using it to move forward, and you can refine it later. My free Knead a Theme challenge helps you test one before you run with it.
